Ibiza explosion injures four

An explosion in Ibiza that left four people injured and forced the evacuation of dozens of residents is likely to become one of Spain’s most closely watched overnight stories this morning. The blast happened on Tuesday late afternoon in a residential block in the Can Cantó area of Ibiza town, with emergency crews, police, and forensic investigators remaining active well into the evening.

The incident took place at around 5.15 pm on Tuesday, 21 April, in an apartment on Calle Sant Vicent de sa Cala, according to Spanish media reports based on official emergency information from the scene. Four people were injured. Two women, aged 45 and 21, were reported to be in a critical condition, while a 23-year-old man was said to be stable in hospital. A fourth injured person was also taken for treatment.

The force of the explosion caused major damage inside the affected home and also impacted neighbouring properties. Around 70 people were evacuated from the building, and several homes were later deemed uninhabitable while structural and safety checks continued.

The cause of the blast

Emergency services, firefighters, local police, and Policía Nacional were deployed to the scene, with Policía Científica involved in examining what happened. Reports in Spain say investigators are looking at whether the blast may have been linked to work being carried out in the building, where gas appliances were reportedly being replaced with electrical ones. The possible cause has not yet been formally confirmed by investigators.

That detail matters because it shifts the story from a simple local incident to a wider public-safety concern. In Spain, stories involving explosions in residential buildings quickly draw attention because they raise questions about renovations, gas safety, and whether neighbouring residents can return home. In this case, the combination of critical injuries, evacuations, and an active police investigation means the story still has clear follow-through value this morning.

The key developments now are the condition of the injured, the outcome of safety inspections, and whether investigators confirm the suspected cause.
