As summer crowds flood the Costa Blanca, Benidorm police have launched a high-tech crackdown on thefts along the city’s busy beaches. The new operation, combining aerial surveillance and on-the-ground patrols, aims to boost safety during one of Spain’s busiest tourist seasons.

Every day, drones now sweep over Benidorm’s coastline, transmitting real-time footage to police control. Operated by the National Police’s Aviation Unit, these aerial tools are part of a broader summer operation designed to stamp out beach crime.

When drones spot suspicious behaviour, officers on the ground—on foot or in vehicles—are alerted to intervene immediately. Patrols from both the Operative Response Group and the Prevention and Response Service have been reinforced, ensuring a more visible police presence across the resort.

Beach theft remains a recurring threat

While crime in Benidorm dipped slightly in 2024—down 3% according to official data—petty theft remains a persistent issue, especially during the summer surge. Last year alone, over 2,300 thefts were recorded, many of them involving stolen bags, phones, and wallets left unattended on the sand.

Tourists remain the most common targets, with opportunistic thieves taking advantage of distractions and relaxed holiday routines.

Deterrence and quick response key to summer safety

Police believe the combination of technology and visibility can help both deter criminals and speed up intervention. The drone footage offers a bird’s-eye view of potential incidents before they escalate, while the beefed-up patrol presence creates a stronger sense of security on the ground.

But authorities say that the community’s role is just as vital. Locals and visitors are encouraged to report anything suspicious directly to on-site officers or via the emergency number 091.

Stay alert on the sand

With crowds swelling and sunbeds filling up fast, the message from police is simple: enjoy the beaches, but don’t let your guard down.

Keep valuables out of sight, avoid leaving belongings unattended while swimming, and if something doesn’t feel right, say something.

Benidorm’s safer summer strategy

Benidorm’s proactive approach—combining drones, rapid-response patrols, and community engagement—marks a modern step in tackling an age-old problem. As thousands descend on Spain’s eastern coast for sun and sea, keeping an eye on your towel may just come with backup from above.
