For Javier Bardem, one of the most acclaimed Spanish actors of his generation, living in Spain has never been in question. Despite the allure of Hollywood and his impressive international career, he chose to stay close to home.
“This is where my roots are, my language, my family, and my friends,” he recently shared in an open-hearted interview on the programme En clave de Rhodes.
Deeply connected to home
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Bardem has proven his limitless talent in films like Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, Dune, and Skyfall. Yet, his bond with Spain has remained unbreakable. “The vibration of this country resonates within me,” he said, a sentiment that perfectly captures his life philosophy.
Culture as a compass
Bardem speaks respectfully of American culture, but admits he never truly felt at home there. “I don’t belong to it,” he said honestly. It’s not a matter of rejection, but rather a profound connection to his own heritage. “What happens here affects me directly. That’s why I want to stay, to make a difference where I can.”
Working in his native language
Another reason why Spain is essential to Javier Bardem is the language. “Acting in my mother tongue brings a different kind of organicity,” he explained enthusiastically. He is currently working on a new film directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, known for As Bestas and Los años nuevos. Anyone who watches Bardem perform can immediately sense the authenticity he brings.
Life with Penélope Cruz
Bardem’s choice to stay in Spain is not only professional but deeply personal. Since marrying Penélope Cruz in 2010, he has lived a relatively low-key life in Madrid with their two children, far from the glitter and glamour of Los Angeles. “Here, we can raise our children with the same values and culture we ourselves grew up with,” Cruz has said.
A career filled with highlights
Looking at Bardem’s career, it’s easy to see why he is admired both nationally and internationally. His breakthrough came in 1992 with Jamón Jamón, starring alongside Cruz. In 1994, he received his first Goya Award for Días contados. Then came his first Oscar nomination for Before Night Falls (2000), followed by his Oscar win for No Country for Old Men (2008), where his portrayal of Anton Chigurh became iconic. Other standout performances include Mar adentro (2004), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), and Biutiful (2010), the latter earning him yet another Oscar nomination. To date, Bardem has collected six Goya Awards.
Javier Bardem is financial loyal to Spain
Javier Bardem also remains financially loyal to his country. “I pay my taxes here, even though the rate is 49%,” he said with a laugh. “In Los Angeles or New York, it can be even higher.” His decision to stay in Spain is not only emotional but also a matter of principle.
