Tortilla de patata champion elected during Alicante Gastronomía

The annual election for the best tortilla de patata takes place today during the culinary feria Alicante Gastronomía. Today we will find out which restaurant serves this popular Spanish tapa, which is usually prepared with egg, potato and onion. 

Trofeo Tescoma 

Fifteen chefs from eight different autonomous communities will do everything they can to convince the jury that his or hers is the tastiest at this sixteenth edition of the prestigious tortilla championship, the so-called Trofeo Tescoma. 

The participating chefs come from Galicia, La Rioja, Cantabria, Basque Country, Madrid, Castile and León, Extremadura and Valencia. This afternoon at 4.15 pm they will have 75 minutes to present their tortilla to the jury.

Jury of famous Spanish chefs 

The tortilla baking championship is an initiative of culinary critic Rafael García Santos, the chairman of the jury. The remaining jury consists of a select group of high-quality chefs with a Michelin star or Soles Repsol award (best restaurants and chefs in Spain and Portugal). This includes Carme Ruscalleda (Moments Mandarin Oriental), Kiko Moya (L’Escaleta), Alberto Ferrruz (BonAmb) and Fran Martínez (Maralba). In addition to the star chefs, culinary critic from the RNE Pepa Fernández also participates in the jury. 

Last year the participants made it so difficult for the jury that it decided to award the coveted trophy not to one but to two winners. The level was so high that the jury did not unanimously choose a tortilla. For example, in 2022, the top prizes of the Spanish tortilla baking competition went to chef Carlos Olabuenaga from Logroño from Tizona restaurant and to Alberto García Ponte and Ana María Suarez from Mesón O Pote from Betanzos (A Coruña). 

Feria de Alicante Gastronomía 

This year’s Feria Alicante Gastronomía will take place from September 29 to October 2. In addition to the Trofeo Tescoma, other competitions take place such as the best steak tartare, tuna tartare or best recipe with artichoke. Masterclasses can also be followed and workshops are organised for families with children.
