Durango will get Biskaie's first Parador Hotel

The province of Bizkaia is likely to welcome its very first Parador Nacional in the near future. If approved, this would remove Bizkaia’s status as the only Spanish province without one of these iconic state-run hotels.

This week, the Spanish Senate is set to discuss a proposal to open a Parador in the Basque town of Durango, choosing from one of three historic buildings.

What is a Parador Nacional?

A Parador Nacional is a luxury hotel that forms part of a nationwide network of state-owned accommodation in Spain. Often located in historic buildings such as castles, monasteries, or palaces—or set in striking natural surroundings—these hotels aim to promote tourism while preserving cultural heritage. Their blend of history, architecture, and comfort makes them especially appealing to travellers seeking authenticity, quality, and cultural-historical relevance.

Widespread political support for the proposal

The initiative has been put forward by the Partido Popular (PP). The political party has stated that the proposal is receiving broad political backing. Both the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and the ruling PSOE party have voiced their support, with an estimated 90% of senators expected to vote in favour.

Raquel Gómez, president of the PP in Bizkaia, described the opening of the province’s first Parador Nacional as “a way to settle a historic debt”. She also called it “a unique opportunity to harness Bizkaia’s cultural heritage and place it firmly on the international map”.

Three potential sites in Durango have been identified as candidates for the future Parador. These are the Palacio Garai, the Palacio Pinondo Etxea, and the former San Agustín hospital. Each building holds significant historical value and is considered suitable for conversion into a high-end tourist accommodation.

Parador hotel boost for tourism and the local economy

A Parador Nacional in Durango would attract visitors. Furthermore, it creates jobs and boosts the local economy. “Durango is strategically located between the Basque Country’s three provinces, making it an attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists,” Gómez added.
