The Basque Country is one of the most remarkable northern areas for its nature, tranquillity and beauty. The happiest city in Spain 2023 is located in the Basque Country, in the province of Bizkaia. And that’s not surprising; residents of Bizkaia are satisfied with their quality of life.

The happiest city in Spain is located in the province of Biscay. And that’s not surprising; residents of Biscay are satisfied with their quality of life. It gets an average of 7.73 in the province of Biscay. Furthermore, the economic situation and employment are given the average figures of 6.40 and 6.08 respectively.

The  Institute for Quality Life’s Happy City Index #2023 states that Bilbao is the happiest city in Spain. The outcome is based on criteria such as the environment, green spaces, commitment to the well-being of residents, politics and education. But in addition, issues such as mobility, innovation and the economy were also examined.

In this ranking, there are 200 cities in the world and Bilbao is ranked 69th on the list of happiest cities. This puts Bilbao in the category ‘silver cities’, ahead of Glasgow (Scotland), Maastricht (Netherlands) and Amstetten (Austria). Bilbao finished behind Newcastle (England), Bordeaux (France) and Villach (Austria).

The northern Spanish city, known for the Guggenheim Museum and the delicious pintxos, among other things, leaves four other Spanish cities behind on the list. Like, for example, Madrid, which has reached the 95th position. Barcelona is ranked 115th. León is ranked 119th. Valencia, after all, is in 125th place.

Winner is in Denmark

At the top of the table for 2023, Aarhus, located in Denmark, is at the top of the gold hierarchy of this index. In second place is Amsterdam in the Netherlands, closely followed by Bergen in Norway.

Despite the fact that the Danish metropolis occupies the first place in the list, the organisation notes that determining an undisputed winner is complicated. Therefore, the happiest cities are divided into the categories of gold, silver, and bronze.
