The use of fireworks and firecrackers during celebrations is an age-old tradition in hundreds of cities around the world. But fireworks don’t mean celebration for everyone! The loud noise and bright explosions can have major consequences for humans (e.g. people with autism) and animals.

In many cities, fireworks have given way to other forms of entertainment that are more modern and safer. Such as the use of drones with light or the projection of images on historical monuments). Also in Spain, there are cities that have started to ban or restrict the use of fireworks in order to protect the well-being of people, their pets and other animals that are sensitive to noise.

Barcelona is one of the pioneers

One of the pioneers in the regulation of fireworks is Barcelona. The Catalan capital has taken strict measures to limit the use of noisy fireworks during events and festivities.

The local authorities, in collaboration with animal welfare organisations, have promoted the use of silent fireworks. This remains beautiful to look at, without noise pollution. A decision that residents applaud. Many of them have experienced first-hand how much stress these events can cause their pets.

Fireworks in Valencia, Madrid and Zaragoza

Another city that has introduced important restrictions is Valencia. This town is known for the world-famous Las Fallas celebration and has tried to strike a balance between preserving its traditions and protecting animals.

Madrid has also taken steps to regulate fireworks in response to the many complaints from pet owners and recommendations from veterinarians. In addition, quieter alternatives and events that do not rely on fireworks for entertainment are promoted as measures to create a safer and less stressful environment for animals during the festivities.

Zaragoza has also shown that it cares about the welfare of its animals: the city has adopted a policy to reduce the noise of its fireworks displays, encouraging the use of quieter alternatives. To this end, the authorities have worked closely with animal protection organisations. In this way, they ensure that the festivities are inclusive and safe for all members of the community, including the four-legged animals.

Rules for fireworks in Vittoria-Gasteiz and Vigo

The small town of Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque Country is also an example of effective implementation of animal welfare policies. In 2019, the city banned the use of noisy fireworks in its municipal festivities.

This decision was made after consulting with animal welfare experts and the support of the community. And this initiative is paying off, with a marked decrease in reports of stress and anxiety in pets during the festivities.

Finally, in Galicia, cities such as Vigo have followed this trend by limiting the use of fireworks during certain festivities. Local authorities have been proactive in promoting events that don’t rely on noisy fireworks. Instead, they opt for other forms of entertainment that don’t cause stress to animals.
