The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, addressed the nation on Wednesday, urging citizens in regions affected by the devastating DANA storm to stay vigilant as the storm system continues to wreak havoc across the eastern and southeastern parts of the country.

Speaking from Moncloa, Sánchez assured those impacted that the government would deploy “all necessary resources” from both the Spanish state and the European Union to aid recovery. He stressed the importance of continued caution, saying, “Do not let your guard down; the DANA is still causing damage and we must remain alert until the situation subsides.”

With at least 62 fatalities reported, predominantly in the Valencia region, Sánchez expressed solidarity with those searching for missing loved ones and extended his sympathy to the families who have lost everything to the extreme weather. “We will not leave you alone,” he affirmed, pledging comprehensive support as recovery efforts are underway. “Spain is with you, mourning together, and committed to supporting you every day, around the clock, for as long as it takes to recover,” he said.

Coordinated response and on-the-ground support

Sánchez outlined that all government agencies, including the National Insurance Compensation Consortium, are closely collaborating with regional leaders and local mayors to facilitate a rapid and cohesive response to the disaster. He thanked emergency services for their tireless efforts, including firefighters, police, the Military Emergency Unit (UME), and the civil protection units working throughout the disaster-stricken areas.

Sánchez also appealed to residents of other regions under continued weather warnings, including Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Catalonia, as well as those newly on alert in areas such as Aragón, Navarra, and Ceuta, to exercise extreme caution. He urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, stay clear of water courses, and pay close attention to official warnings. “No life should be risked during this time,” he stated, emphasising that while recovery begins, the emergency is far from over.

The Prime Minister promised full support for affected communities, recognising the severe personal and economic toll the storm has caused. “We will help rebuild every street, every bridge. Spain stands united with you, and we will overcome this tragedy together,” Sánchez concluded.
