Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has officially declared Valencia and surrounding areas as disaster zones due to the devastating effects of the recent DANA (Isolated High-Level Depression) that has wreaked havoc across the region.

This designation allows for the rapid mobilisation of resources and immediate federal support for the affected areas. These are primarily in Valencia and Castellón, as well as parts of Andalucía and Castilla-La Mancha. Sánchez urged residents to “stay indoors and follow all safety recommendations,” emphasising that “the DANA is not yet over.”

Continued commitment to aiding residents

Following a meeting with Carlos Mazón, President of the Generalitat Valenciana, and other local authorities at the Emergency Coordination Centre in Valencia, Sánchez assured that the national government would provide support “by land, sea, and air” for as long as necessary. “The collaboration between the central government and the Comunidad Valenciana will be absolute and unwavering,” he stated. Furthermore, he affirmed a continued commitment to aiding residents, restoring infrastructure, and supporting ongoing rescue operations.

Emergency coordination and safety measures

Sánchez, alongside Mazón, toured the Centre of Operational Coordination. This is currently serving as the nerve centre for all emergency efforts in the DANA-hit zones. After a briefing on the disaster’s scope, they held a solemn minute of silence to honour the victims of the flooding. Sánchez reaffirmed that “all possible resources” would be mobilised to bring relief and ensure the security of those affected.

In light of the ongoing risks posed by the DANA, Sánchez highlighted the government’s strategy of “absolute cooperation” with regional officials to maintain stability and public safety. Emergency efforts are focused on locating missing persons, stabilising waterlogged infrastructure, and supporting citizens who remain in high-risk areas.

Call for continued vigilance as crisis response unfolds

With weather conditions remaining unpredictable, Sánchez stressed the need for residents to remain vigilant and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. “Our priority is to protect lives and keep everyone safe,” he said, urging caution in light of potential further flooding and disruptions. Emergency services have been instructed to proceed with intense vigilance, especially in flood-prone zones.
