In a bid for a new life chapter, Richard Gere, the celebrated Hollywood actor, has officially left the United States and moved to Madrid, Spain, alongside his wife, Alejandra Silva, and family.

The 75-year-old star of iconic films such as American Gigolo (1980), Pretty Woman (1990), and Chicago (2003), sold his Connecticut mansion in New Canaan for a substantial $10.75 million. This luxurious property sale symbolises Gere’s departure from the US, a move long on the horizon and now completed.

Family ties and political reasons

Richard Gere’s transition to Spain comes not only from personal desires but also amid tensions in US politics. The actor has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, and Gere’s wife, Alejandra, recently expressed shock over Trump’s recent political success, voicing her dismay online. For Gere, known to be politically active, the decision aligns with both his principles and personal life goals.

Alejandra Silva, a publicist hailing from La Coruña, Spain, is now closer to her family and cultural roots, a significant motivation behind the move. Since the couple married in 2018, Silva has adjusted to life in the United States. However, Gere expressed his gratitude to her for this compromise, stating that it was now time to immerse himself in her world.

Life in luxury: Gere’s Connecticut mansion

Gere’s former Connecticut estate, which sold for $10.75 million, is a historic marvel built in 1938. This grand property spans 13 hectares, showcasing six spacious bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, and additional luxuries. The estate includes expansive gardens, a stunning pool, and a three-bedroom guesthouse. Gere originally acquired this property in 2022, marking a brief yet memorable residence.

Embracing Spain: The family’s new chapter

Relocating to Spain marks an exciting adventure for the Gere family. The actor and his wife are bringing their two young sons, Alexander (5) and James (4), into this new European lifestyle. While Gere’s career brought him to iconic cities around the world, this move to Madrid symbolises his dedication to family and his wife’s cultural roots. Although Spain will be their primary residence, Gere plans to maintain a rural retreat in New York, ensuring he retains a connection to his American roots.

A love story that defies distance

The romance between Gere and Silva began in 2014 in the picturesque Italian town of Positano. At the time, Gere was navigating his separation from actress Carey Lowell, with whom he shares a son, Homer, now 24. In 2018, Gere and Silva exchanged vows and have kept their relationship largely private, occasionally sharing affectionate messages on social media. Their journey has seen them balance their personal lives across continents, and now, their union finds them building a new home in Spain.
