Cyclone Kirk has brought heavy rain and strong winds this week, especially in the north of Spain. And although the weather situation seems to calm down for a while, it is not yet time to put away the umbrella.

A new Atlantic storm – known as Berenice – threatens to bring heavy rain this weekend, especially in the south, west and centre of the peninsula, followed by a DANA and the remnants of Hurricane Leslie.

Incidents in Andalucia

In view of the weather forecast, Aemet activated code red (with extreme risk) for Saturday in the provinces of Seville and Cordoba, due to rainfall that could accumulate up to 120 litres per square metre in 12 hours.

The Andalucian Minister of the Presidency and Interior, Antonio Sanz, has announced that the Centre for Coordination of Emergency Situations (Cecem 112) has managed more than a hundred incidents in the region. In particular, around 118 reports have been resolved – without injuries – following the activation of the Special Flood Risk Emergency Plan in Andalucia (PERI). In addition, the minister hopes that this weather “will not have serious consequences” and emphasises its importance in view of the drought.

Sunday rather quite

Sunday is expected to be a “quieter” day, with less rain overall, although it could still be heavy in western Andalusia in the early morning hours. Temperatures will rise “noticeably”, especially at night, to more than 25 or 30 degrees in large parts of the area. “These are high temperatures for mid-October,” emphasised the Aemet spokesman.

DANA

As the weekend progresses, the shower will weaken until it becomes a DANA. The cold drop will remain in the southwest for a few more days, maintaining the unstable atmosphere in this area of the peninsula, according to the meteorological portal. Over the course of Monday, this isolated high-level depression will be absorbed by an Atlantic trough that will reach the west of the peninsula.

Rain on the way

So next week is expected to be “rainy” in almost all of Spain. From Monday, instability and showers will develop in large parts of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, especially in the southern half, without ruling out that some of these showers will be intense.

Ex-Hurricane Leslie

That has everything to do with the remnants of Hurricane Leslie, warns Meteored. It has since been downgraded to a tropical storm. Leslie is now heading towards the Azores and could approach the southwest coast of the Iberian Peninsula or the northern Canary Islands as the “ex-Leslie squall”.

Therefore, abundant rainfall is expected to continue on the Atlantic coast and in the southwest. The wind seems weak and not resembling that of Kirk, which received hurricane force in the north of Spain
