Entrepreneurs in Spain are working on an ambitious project to transform the country into “Europe’s Florida” by creating senior living communities tailored to the needs of retirees.

Inspired by the success of similar developments in the United States, these villages aim to attract both Spanish and international retirees seeking an active yet secure lifestyle.

The model is a growing trend for retired Americans in Spain

Florida is home to over five million retirees drawn by its favourable climate, tax benefits, and well-developed infrastructure for seniors. Communities such as The Villages near Orlando have flourished, growing by 40% between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. With more than 60,000 homes, this development includes golf courses, pharmacies, restaurants, and a wide range of amenities, setting the benchmark for senior living.

Spain’s first “active villages”

In Cantabria, a northern region of Spain known for its natural beauty and mild climate, the first Spanish retirement community of this kind is being planned. Alejandro Varona, CEO of Aldeas Activas, leads the project, which aims to open its doors by 2026.

The vision includes villages designed to cater to independent seniors and those transitioning to assisted living. Each community will feature 45 homes, built to accommodate one or two residents, alongside social centres for activities and events.

Smart and sustainable living

The homes in these villages will integrate artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance safety and independence while respecting privacy. Sensors will monitor residents’ movements and alert caregivers in case of emergencies, such as falls or health concerns.

The AI system will also manage essential household functions like heating, gas, and water. This will allow a single caregiver to oversee multiple homes. The focus on preventive care includes constant monitoring of vital signs, ensuring swift intervention if needed.

Why Cantabria?

Cantabria offers a combination of stunning natural surroundings, a temperate climate, and supportive local administrations sensitive to the challenges of aging and depopulation. The project’s first village is expected to be built in Polanco, a location chosen for its willingness to address senior care issues.

The cost for residents is estimated at €1,200–€1,300 per month, covering accommodation, meals, and services. However, securing government support is critical to ensuring the project’s viability.

Addressing a growing need

With Europe’s aging population and rising demand for innovative senior care solutions, the Aldeas Activas project could offer a scalable model to tackle these challenges. It also positions Spain as a potential retirement hub for American expatriates looking for affordable, high-quality living options.
