stormy weather expected in Valencia

This year around Christmas the weather has been quite pleasing in the Valencia Region. With mild temperatures, clear skies, and highs around 20ºC. However, as 2025 dawns, residents of the Valencia Region should brace themselves for stormy weather.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a forecast predicting significant instability in the Mediterranean area from January 1 to 5, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected in parts of the region. According to AEMET, the southern parts of the Valencia Region, including Alicante and southern Valencia, are most likely to experience heavy downpours and stormy weather. The agency warns of “locally strong” precipitation with potentially significant accumulations, particularly in areas such as La Costera, La Marina, and La Vega Baja. Meanwhile, other parts of Spain will enjoy more stable weather, albeit with morning fog and low clouds in regions like the Ebro Valley and the northern plateau.

Mediterranean instability

AEMET’s forecast highlights the Mediterranean’s role in the upcoming weather pattern. The first week of January will see abundant cloud cover and frequent storms, especially in coastal and southern regions. The Balearic Islands are also expected to experience showers. This marks a sharp contrast to the relatively stable conditions forecast for the rest of Spain.

The wet weather is attributed to a combination of atmospheric instability and cooler temperatures, which will persist through the end of December. Currently, frosty mornings and chilly nights dominate much of the Valencia Region, with daytime temperatures ranging from 6°C to 17°C in Valencia city and a potential drop to 4°C in Castellón.

What to expect in the coming days

Sunday, December 29: The southern third of the region may see low clouds and light rain, while other areas will enjoy clear skies. Temperatures remain steady, with mild days and frosty mornings in the interior. Winds will be calm or light and variable.

Monday, December 30: Low clouds and light rain could persist in southern areas, with little change in temperatures. Winds will remain calm.

Tuesday, December 31: Cloud cover will increase, especially in the south, with a higher chance of rain. Minimum temperatures will rise slightly in southern areas, while maximums may dip in the interior. By New Year’s Eve, thunderstorms might begin to affect Valencia’s metropolitan area and parts of Alicante.
