Spanish telecom giant Movistar has issued an urgent phone scam warning to its customers about what is known as the “double call scam.” If you receive a call from a number ending in 1004, you could be the target of fraudsters trying to steal your personal information.
Scammers pose as Movistar representatives and contact customers from a number similar to the official 1004 helpline. The goal? To extract sensitive information, such as personal details or account credentials, and use them for fraudulent activities. They even sometimes switch customers to another provider without their consent.
Movistar has stressed that if you receive a call claiming to be from the company but originating from any number other than 1004, you should be highly suspicious. You may be the victim of a phone scam. “They claim to be from Movistar and offer you a great deal. If you accept, they guide you through a supposed sign-up process. The reality: they want to access your private account and steal your password”, the company states in a press release.
Movistar’s phone scam warning and advice
To protect yourself, Movistar advises customers to follow these key precautions:
- Do not answer calls from suspicious numbers. If you receive a call from a number ending in 1004 or a variation that seems questionable, avoid picking up.
- Never share personal or account details. Movistar will never ask for sensitive information such as passwords over the phone.
- Be cautious of emails and SMS messages. Scammers are also using text-based phishing techniques to trick customers into revealing confidential information.
- Report suspicious calls. If you suspect a fraudulent call, contact Movistar directly through their official channels.
