The Madrid Zoo has bid farewell to eight dolphins, transferring them to Hainan Ocean Paradise in China. The move, recommended by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA), aims to provide a better quality of life for the marine mammals.
According to Madrid Zoo officials, the group has remained together throughout the transition, with efforts made to ensure the highest standards of care. Hainan Ocean Paradise, a recently established facility, is equipped with modern amenities to enhance the dolphins’ well-being.
Hainan Ocean Paradise: A state-of-the-art facility
Located on Hainan Island, the new home for the dolphins offers extensive facilities. These include a full veterinary hospital and multiple laboratories dedicated to marine animal care. The animals will undergo an adaptation period under the supervision of caretakers from Madrid Zoo.
Improved living conditions
The dolphins’ new enclosure consists of five interconnected tanks, including a medical pool. The facility employs advanced technology to maintain optimal conditions, and cetaceans from other European zoos have already been integrated into the park.
Animal activists hail the decision
Proyecto Gran Simio, an animal rights organisation, has welcomed the transfer and called for the permanent closure of Madrid’s dolphinarium. The group has long criticised the zoo for keeping dolphins in small enclosures and using them in performances. They see this transfer as a victory following years of advocacy against the conditions in which the animals were kept.
Future of Madrid’s dolphinarium
Although the dolphins have left, Madrid Zoo’s dolphinarium will continue to function as a temporary sanctuary for marine animals from other facilities. Furthermore, plans are underway to resume educational programs. The possibility of repurposing the dolphinarium for other marine species is also being explored.
