A flamingo, far from its usual wetland habitat, appeared in the streets of Les Planes d’Hostoles, a village in Girona. The unusual sight was likely caused by heavy rains and strong winds from Storm Jana, which recently swept across Catalonia.
The bird was first spotted in the early hours of Thursday morning. Mayor Marc Puig reported that the initial sighting came at around 3.30 am on Avinguda Narcís Arnau. The village, located in a valley near the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, is not a typical stop for flamingos. The storm is believed to have disrupted its migration route, leading it far off course.
Caught on camera
A group of passers-by recorded the moment they encountered the flamingo on a rural road. The bird, visibly disoriented, was seen wandering in the dark. Although it appeared confused, no incidents were reported, and the situation remained calm.
Temporary shelter for safety
Concerned for the flamingo’s well-being, local residents provided temporary shelter. It remained in a house until wildlife specialists arrived around 8.30 am to take over its care. Mayor Puig explained that the priority was to prevent the bird from straying into potential danger.
Investigation into shooting
As reported by El Periódico, the Rural Agents have launched an investigation after discovering that the flamingo had been shot. The wounded bird was found in the village on Thursday morning and was immediately taken to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Fauna Centre for urgent veterinary care. Authorities are working to identify those responsible for the attack.
The Rural Agents have stated that harming a protected species is a serious offence under current regulations. The act could result in administrative sanctions or criminal charges. Investigators are now examining the circumstances of the shooting and seeking witnesses who may have information.
Relocation to a protected reserve
Wildlife conservationists later transferred the flamingo to a wetland reserve, a more suitable environment for the species. Experts believe Storm Jana disrupted its usual migration path, leading it to Les Planes d’Hostoles. The incident highlights how extreme weather conditions can impact wildlife, forcing animals into unfamiliar settings.
A reminder of nature’s unpredictability
The stray flamingo’s journey serves as a reminder of nature’s unpredictability. As storms become more frequent and intense, wildlife faces increasing disruptions to their natural habitats and migration patterns.
