Large temperature differences, code yellow, and room for the sun in Spain

The arrival of the polar cold in the north of the peninsula caused temperature drops in most of Spain. It also rained as a result of a DANA in the north.

Temperatures will rise again this weekend, reports the Spanish weather service Aemet. And in parts of Spain, it will be windy and code yellow will be issued.

On Saturday morning it looked autumnal and in some regions in the north the temperature already fell below 5ºC. “Temperatures more in keeping with October,” reported Aemet on X. The nights in the south of the peninsula and especially on the Andalucian coast were still tropical, without dropping below 20ºC, for example in Málaga, Seville, Ceuta, Melilla or Cádiz.

Sunny weekend

An anticyclone will move close to the peninsula over the weekend, bringing clear and stable skies. Thus, the sun will play the leading role and, together with the anticyclone, will be responsible for the rise in mercury in the thermometers. Even so, it is possible that some instability will occur during the morning, as well as some showers on the Mediterranean coast, especially in the southern half and in the Balearic Islands.

Code yellow: strong winds and high waves

Strong gusts of wind are coming this weekend. In fact, Aemet has issued several yellow warnings for dangerous waves and wind intensity in several coastal areas. The areas with yellow warnings for the weekend are:

Cogesa Expats
Andalucia:

In the area of the Strait of Gibraltar, Cádiz, Almeria, Granada. Winds that can sometimes reach 80 km/h. Winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) will be more frequent in the Strait of Gibraltar, around Tarifa and west of Tarifa, as well as at Trafalgar, Cádiz (off the coast, mainly south of the cape at Los Caños de Meca). Waves of up to 3 metres can occur.

Balearic Islands:

Mallorca -minus the south- and Menorca. North winds of 40 to 60 km/h (force 6 to 7) and waves of 2 to 4 metres.

Catalonia:

In the Empordà area, Girona, there is a northerly wind of 50 to 60 km/h (force 7) and waves of 3 metres.

From Sunday, minimum temperatures will also begin to rise, although the differences between the north and south of the peninsula will remain above 10ºC in some cases.
