June saw a significant rise in traffic fatalities in Spain, with 108 people losing their lives in 96 fatal accidents. This represents an increase in both the number of accidents and deaths compared to the same month last year. Mobility during June increased by 5.1% compared to June 2023, with 39.8 million long-distance trips recorded.

Motorcycle  and off-road fatalities on the rise

As reported by the DGT, there was a notable increase in motorcycle fatalities, with 33 motorcyclists killed, 12 more than in June 2023. These deaths occurred on both motorways and conventional roads. Off-road accidents saw the highest increase, resulting in 58 fatalities, 23 more than the previous year.

In the first half of the year, traffic accidents claimed 540 lives, 37 more than the same period in 2023, marking a 7% increase. June recorded an increase in fatalities on highways and motorways, with 15 more deaths compared to June 2023.

Types of Accidents

While off-road accidents increased, side and front-side collisions decreased (8 compared to 22 in June 2023), and head-on collisions increased (22 compared to 15 in June 2023).

Five of the deceased were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, all of whom were travelling in cars.

Catalonia saw a significant increase in fatalities, with 9 more deaths compared to June 2023.

Daily Fatalities

The deadliest day in June was Sunday, the 30th, with 11 fatalities. In contrast, two days—Friday, the 14th, and Wednesday, the 19th—recorded no fatalities.
