Hurricane Kirk will approach the northwest of mainland Spain between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday. At the moment, warnings for rain, storms, strong winds and waves have been issued in nine autonomous communities, Spanish weather services Aemet and Meterored report. The Spanish weather service made an official announcement about this on Sunday.

Code yellow is in force in Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Galicia, Aragon, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, Navarre and Andalucia. Meteored points out that Hurricane Kirk can produce wind gusts of more than 100 kilometres per hour and rains that can reach up to 50 litres per square metre in 24 hours. Galicia, the southern side of the Cantabrian mountains and the central system are particularly affected. Rain showers are also expected in the southeast and the Valencian Community. Caution should be exercised regarding possible river flooding and landslides, the weather agency warns.

Kirk reaches Spain on Tuesday afternoon

“It is likely that the hurricane will approach the northwest of the peninsula between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, causing a strong Atlantic storm on the Galician and Cantabrian coasts. With very heavy gusts of wind, even local hurricane force, and widespread rainfall on the Atlantic and Cantabrian slopes,” reports Aemet. Maximum temperatures will drop in most of the country, while minimum temperatures will rise in the east of the peninsula and in the Balearic Islands. From Thursday, October 10, the storm will move away to the northeast and the wind will decrease.

Wind

In the eastern Mediterranean and in the northeast, a strong south or east wind blows. The rest of the country is facing winds from the south and southwest. Heavy gusts of wind are expected on the coasts of Galicia, in the Strait of Alborán, in the mountain areas in central Spain and on Mallorca.

Weather from Wednesday

From Wednesday, October 9, Aemet predicts that maximum temperatures will generally rise. Especially inland, in the southeast of Spain. In the southwest of the peninsula and parts of the Mediterranean coast, maximum temperatures will drop slightly.

Minimum temperatures will drop in the southeast of the peninsula and in the northwestern third. In the rest of northern Spain and in the west of Andalucia, the minimum temperature is rising. In the Canary Islands, maximum temperatures are rising and minimum temperatures are falling the most.

Major contradictions within Spain

One of the areas in the country where the thermometers will indicate a lower minimum is Ávila, with 7 degrees, followed by León, with a minimum of 8 degrees. Alicante and Castellón have the highest maximum temperatures with 31 degrees. This is followed by Murcia en Valencia. There it can be 30 and 29 degrees respectively.
