World Cup remembered

FOOTBALL – The 2022 FIFA World Cup is over for another 4 years. But instead of the world talking about the beautiful game, the world is talking about a gesture that was offensive in any language. With controversy and questionable decisions in the build up and during this world cup, what will it be remembered for?

Before the competition even began, there was criticism and controversy surrounding the decision by FIFA to have the World Cup played in Qatar. Various celebrities refused to perform at opening ceremonies due to the human rights issues in Qatar. Players were threatened by FIFA. If team captains wore the “One Love” armbands, they would be given a yellow card. The armbands were to make a statement against discrimination. However, due to Qatar´s anti-homosexuality laws, the teams were forced to play without them.

Following that, the German team, posed infront of press photographers prior to their game against Japan. The players all had their hands covering their mouths in protest.

Referees

During the Argentina-Netherlands quarter-final, the referee handed out an incredible 18 yellow cards and 1 red card. Not surprisingly, he was sent home soon after following numerous complaints.

In Portugal´s game against Morocco which saw them go out of the World Cup, there were again complaints about the refereeing decisions. Interestingly, the referee, the assistant refs, and the VAR were all from Argentina. The Portuguese side complained about the little amount of added time. And, furthermore, that the referees should not have been from countries still competing in the World Cup.

VAR

In Spain´s game against Japan, the first goal for Japan seemed to be over the line. However, after a lengthy check by VAR, it was allowed as the rules state the ball must be 100% over the line.

Aside from the above decisions, there were many complaints from players as to penalties not awarded, fouls, and so on. So much so, that after Uruguay were knocked out, angry players confronted the referee, and continued to follow him down the tunnel. Despite Uruguay winning the game, a late penalty claim was denied, and due to goals scored, it meant Uruguay were sent home.
