On Friday evening at approximately 9.15 pm, Córdoba’s iconic mosque-cathedral, the Mezquita, was struck by a fire that threatened its centuries-old structure. Witnesses reported noticing smoke near the building, which immediately triggered the activation of the monument’s self-protection protocols.
The fire began in a chapel in the Al Mansúr area, where machinery was stored. An electrical fault, possibly related to a mechanical sweeper’s battery, is believed to be the cause, although investigations are ongoing.
Firefighters contain blaze with swift response
Within minutes of the alarm being raised, three fire brigade teams arrived on the scene. They deployed quickly, tackling the fire from various points: within the chapel, from the rooftops, and outside the structure. The rapid response limited the damage to the chapel and its immediate surroundings. This prevented the flames from spreading throughout the rest of the building. Mayor José María Bellido commended the fire brigade’s actions, describing them as “efficient and resolute.” Thanks to their prompt intervention, the situation was brought under control, and the most significant heritage of Córdoba was saved.
Continuous monitoring and damage evaluation
The firefighters remained at the site overnight, ensuring the area was fully cooled and any flare-ups were extinguished. A detailed damage assessment was scheduled for the following morning. During the operation, one firefighter suffered from heatstroke and had to be evacuated. No further details on their condition have been provided at this stage.
Global attention and reassurance from authorities
The fire attracted a great deal of attention, both locally and internationally. Local police cordoned off the area around the Mezquita to control the situation, and both the mayor of Córdoba and the bishop emeritus visited the site to reassure the public. Given the immense historical and cultural significance of the building, reactions poured in from around the world, with many expressing concern and relief as news spread of the fire’s containment.
A rare event in the Mezquita’s history
The Mezquita, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 8th century, has witnessed few such incidents over its long history. This fire marks the third recorded blaze, with only two previous fires having occurred in 1910 and 2001. This rare occurrence highlights the vulnerability of such an important cultural monument to potential disaster.
Political leaders express gratitude for emergency response
Political figures at both the national and regional levels took to social media to express their gratitude for the swift and decisive action of the fire brigade. Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the PP, and Juanma Moreno, president of the Junta de Andalucía, both acknowledged the firefighters’ hard work in protecting Córdoba’s landmark. María Jesús Montero, Deputy Prime Minister, also shared her thoughts, describing the images as “shocking” and applauding the fire brigade’s efficiency.
A close call for Córdoba’s heritage
Thanks to the rapid response of emergency services, what could have been a catastrophic event for the Mezquita was contained. As authorities continue their damage assessments, the focus now shifts to ensuring the continued protection of this historic treasure.
