A new DANA entered Spain last night. Locally, municipalities in the Mediterranean region received more than a hundred litres of rain per square metre. Cars got stuck and more than forty schools have closed in Spanish regions.
The Coordination Centre in Murcia has received 117 incidents related to heavy rainfall so far this morning alone. This mainly concerned flooded streets and vehicles that became trapped and could not continue. As far as is known, no one was injured. The municipalities of Cartagena and Mazarrón in particular sounded the alarm on Tuesday morning. According to meteorologists, more than 10 litres of rain per square metre fell in the former municipality before 7.00 am this morning.
Crèches and schools are closed in more than forty municipalities in Murcia and Valencia
Schools in more than forty municipalities, fourteen in Murcia and twenty-eight in Valencia, did not open today because of the rain and road closures. Especially the province of Alicante reported heavy rainfall with peaks of 40 litres per square metre in just one hour. All education has been suspended in the cities of Elche, Orihuela and Torrevieja due to strong gusts of wind and heavy rain.
Spain can expect this in the coming days, according to Aemet
Due to the presence of this DANA, which means an isolated depression at a higher level, the Spanish weather service does not predict much better for the coming days. Apart from the fact that Spain could use some precipitation, the weather in the coming days can be called ‘extreme’ to say the least.
On Tuesday, the Aemet predicts rain and storms mainly in Andalucia and the far east of Spain. Consequently, the weather service has given Andalucia, Murcia and Valencia code orange due to rain and thunderstorms. Code yellow applies to the regions of Aragon, Castile-La Mancha and Catalonia due to thunderstorms, heavy showers and local hail.
On Wednesday it seems to be calming down a bit. However, for Thursday the Aemet again warns of storms and rain in a wide strip that moves from the northeast to the south of Spain. Furthermore, the rain will expand towards the weekend and on Saturday and Sunday the Spanish weather service expects it to rain all over Spain.
