Tucked away in the hills of Granada province lies one of Andalusia’s most intriguing prehistoric sites — the Cueva de las Ventanas. Found near the quiet village of Piñar, this remarkable cave opens a window into the lives of early humans who inhabited the region thousands of years ago.
The cave, set deep within the Sierra de Arana mountain range, has long fascinated archaeologists. Evidence uncovered here traces human activity back to both the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. For centuries, the shelter provided by the cave served multiple civilisations, making it an essential site for understanding the early history of southern Spain.
Nature’s own Cathedral
Perched at 1,000 metres above sea level, the Cueva de las Ventanas is a natural masterpiece. Visitors are greeted by an awe-inspiring array of stalactites and stalagmites, shaped slowly over millions of years. The cavern’s rugged beauty and mysterious atmosphere only add to its powerful sense of history.
Treasures beneath the surface
Beyond its geological splendour, the cave holds significant archaeological value. Excavations have revealed tools, artefacts, and remains that shed light on how ancient communities once lived. Modern guided tours offer visitors not just a glimpse of these finds but also detailed reconstructions that bring prehistoric daily life vividly to life.
Visitor information
Recognised as a Monumento Natural de Andalucía, the Cueva de las Ventanas welcomes visitors year-round. The village of Piñar lies approximately 50 kilometres from the city of Granada, within the scenic Los Montes region. Before or after visiting the cave, many travellers also explore the ruins of the Moorish castle that still stand in Piñar’s historic centre.
A small tourist train conveniently transports guests from the village to the cave entrance. Inside, temperatures remain steady at around 13°C, so bringing a warm layer is advisable. The cave operates from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm. Entry fees are €8 for adults and €5 for children.
More to Discover in Piñar
For those keen to continue exploring, Piñar offers another impressive cavern: the Cueva de la Carigüela. While less well-known, it too holds its own archaeological importance and further enriches the area’s prehistoric appeal.
Whether you’re passionate about history, fascinated by geology, or simply looking for a unique day trip from Granada, the Cueva de las Ventanas offers an unforgettable glimpse into Andalucia’s distant past.
