Six regions in Spain have reintroduced face mask recommendations in healthcare settings due to a surge in respiratory infections. Aragón, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Cantabria, La Rioja, and the Canary Islands are advising mask use to combat increasing cases of flu and other respiratory illnesses.

These measures aim to protect vulnerable groups and alleviate pressure on healthcare systems.

Rising infection rates stress healthcare systems

The winter of 2025 has brought a sharp rise in respiratory infections across Spain. Infection rates, particularly after the Epiphany period, have exceeded seasonal averages. In Aragón, flu cases have climbed to 75.5 per 100,000 residents, surpassing the epidemic threshold. Catalonia and the Valencian Community report over 900 respiratory infections per 100,000 residents, putting significant strain on hospitals and emergency services.

Regional measures at a glance

  • Aragón: Masks are recommended for healthcare staff, visitors, and individuals in crowded indoor areas as part of the region’s second protection phase.
  • Catalonia: Masks are encouraged for hospital staff, nursing home workers, and visitors in waiting areas and high-traffic zones.
  • Valencian Community: Internal guidelines promote mask use for healthcare workers and patients, particularly those displaying respiratory symptoms.
  • Cantabria: The regional health authority strongly advises mask use in waiting rooms, emergency departments, and other high-risk areas. Mandatory rules may follow in areas with elevated infection rates.
  • La Rioja: Hospitals and care facilities have reintroduced mask recommendations to cope with rising infection rates and prevent further spread.
  • Canary Islands: Measures include mask use in hospitals and nursing homes, implemented since December 2024, alongside expanded healthcare capacity.

Additional preventive measures

Some regions are complementing mask recommendations with broader strategies. Aragón has expanded healthcare services to manage the surge in patients. The Valencian Community is working to reduce pressure on emergency departments, while Catalonia promotes widespread flu vaccination.

No nationwide policy yet

Despite regional actions, Spain has not adopted a unified approach to face masks. Areas like Andalucia, Madrid, and Galicia have not issued new guidelines but continue to recommend masks for symptomatic individuals. Health authorities stress the importance of responsible mask use to mitigate further spread.

Preparing for continued increases

Experts warn that respiratory infections are likely to rise further in the coming weeks. Health officials emphasise the role of masks and preventive measures in curbing transmission. “Wearing masks in healthcare settings protects the most vulnerable and helps reduce pressure on hospitals,” stated the Ministry of Health.

By reinstating masks in healthcare environments, these regions aim to safeguard public health and ensure their medical facilities remain capable of meeting increasing demands.
