The Cyclo-cross World Cup is set to draw global attention to Benidorm on 19 January 2025. Two major competitors have already confirmed their participation. Belgium’s Wout van Aert, a three-time world champion and defending titleholder, will join Spain’s Felipe Orts, the recent European silver medalist, on the start line.

Cycling fans now await confirmation from Mathieu van der Poel. The Dutch rider, current gravel world champion, is expected to announce his decision shortly. Organisers are optimistic, as Van der Poel resides in Alicante province and sees the race as a strong fit for his calendar.

Benidorm´s rise as a cyclo-cross hub

In just two years, Benidorm has emerged as a key destination for cyclo-cross, attracting around 35% of participants from abroad. Its climate, challenging terrain, and enthusiastic crowds make it a prime location for international events.

The city’s growing reputation could also position it as a future World Championship host. Mayor Toni Pérez highlighted the event’s international reach, noting its positive impact on tourism during the off-peak season. Last year’s event generated an estimated 14,000 overnight stays, benefiting the local economy.

Felipe Orts: Local favourite and contender

For Felipe Orts, who hails from Villajoyosa, the Benidorm race is a chance to compete on home soil. The Spanish cyclist has been in strong form, claiming silver at the European Championships and earning World Cup points this season.

“Racing close to home is always special,” Orts said. He is expected to push for a podium finish, with organisers praising his recent performances. “Van Aert and Van der Poel should take him seriously,” they added.

Boost for Benidorm´s sporting profile

The Cyclo-cross World Cup continues to enhance Benidorm’s reputation as a top sporting destination. With its ideal conditions and strategic location, the city has quickly become a favourite for athletes and fans alike.

As the countdown to race day begins, all eyes are on Van der Poel’s decision. If he joins the line-up, the competition in Benidorm promises to deliver world-class excitement.
