The Animal and Environmental Party Pacma has vehemently criticised the treatment of bulls during the ‘bous a la mar’ festivities in Dénia, Alicante. The event, where bulls are driven into the sea for entertainment, has been labeled “incomprehensible and worrying” by the party.

Pacma claims the tradition is extremely cruel, highlighting that children and youths often watch and participate. Party chairman Javier Luna condemned the festivities, noting a particular incident where a bull was bleeding from its nose. This illustrates the brutality of the event.

Call for termination

Pacma has urged the Dénia municipality to permanently end the ‘bous a la mar’ festivities, threatening to launch an international campaign if no action is taken. Luna stated, “A civilised society cannot allow such events to continue in our country.”

Festival background

Declared a national tourist attraction in 1993, ‘Bous a la Mar’ involves bulls being chased to the sea, where they are taunted until they jump or are pushed into the water. Despite its popularity, the event faces fierce opposition from animal rights groups due to its inherent cruelty. Last year, a bull drowned during the festival.

Pacma remains dedicated to promoting animal welfare and is advocating for more humane treatment of animals in traditional festivities. The party aims to raise awareness and instigate societal change to abolish such practices.
