From Friday, the DANA will disappear and a change in weather is predicted in Spain. The weather is then affected by storm fronts from the Atlantic Ocean that also bring rain. Seven provinces are on standby in connection with yellow and orange warnings. Temperatures are going to rise this weekend.

“The worst of the DANA is over, but the danger remains,” said Rubén del Campo, spokesman for the Spanish weather service (Aemet). The DANA will turn into a more stable cold storm over the Atlantic Ocean.

A cold snap will bring rain and storms to large parts of Spain on Friday. This will cause heavy rainfall in the western Central System and Extremadura, and thunderstorms in Huelva and on the coast of Cadiz. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) warns of heavy rainfall, storms, and waves in seven provinces.

Yellow and orange warnings for rain and storms

  • Ávila, Salamanca (Castilla y León), and Cáceres (Extremadura) will be given a yellow warning for rainfall
  • Huelva (Andalucia) receives an orange warning for rain, storms, and gusts of sea breeze
  • Almería, Granada, and Málaga (Andalucia) get a yellow warning for high waves

Rainy weekend

Rain is expected on Saturday and Sunday due to an isolated cold layer of air that will hit the southwest of the peninsula and the north of the Canary Islands. Rain is forecast in large parts of the peninsula, but not in eastern Cantabria, the headwaters of the Ebro, the northeast and southeast coasts, Melilla, and the Balearic Islands. Most of the rain will fall in Extremadura, in the west of Andalucia, and in the western Canary Islands.

Rising temperatures over the weekend

A big change is expected towards the weekend with unusually high temperatures for this time of year. “Temperatures are rising because the storm is bringing milder air. We will notice this especially in the south, east, and the Balearic Islands,” explains Samuel Biener of weather service Meteored.

On Friday, especially in the southwest of Spain, the temperature will rise noticeably, with highs of 25ºC in some cities of Andalucia. On Saturday, these values could go even higher. And on Sunday, the Mediterranean coast, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands will become warmer. Temperatures are dropping in the far north.

Will cold return next week?

The next few days will be mild for the time of year, even “warm” in some areas, with 25 degrees in parts of the Guadalquivir Valley. But there might be another weather change coming next week; according to the forecasts, the cold may reach into the middle of next week.
