British athlete dies at Ironman

A 25-year-old British athlete died after becoming unwell during the swimming stage of the IRONMAN 70.3 Vitoria-Gasteiz in northern Spain.

The incident happened on Sunday morning in the Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir in Álava. The participant was rescued from the water and received urgent medical attention, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Basque public broadcaster EITB confirmed that the man was a British national and said he died at the scene after feeling unwell during the swim.

Emergency services called to reservoir

The athlete was competing in the 1.9-kilometre swimming section of the middle-distance event when the emergency unfolded. According to Cadena SER, witnesses close to the shore raised the alarm after noticing that he appeared to be in difficulty.

Medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him beside the reservoir. The Ertzaintza said a medical helicopter operated by the Basque health service, Osakidetza, was requested at around 8.30 am, but the athlete died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency teams.

What have the Ironman organisers said?

IRONMAN confirmed the death in a brief statement carried by Cadena SER. The organisation said the athlete had been rescued from the swimming section and given urgent medical attention at the scene.

It expressed its condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones, adding that no further comment would be made out of respect for the athlete and his relatives. His name had not been released publicly by Tuesday morning.

Although some reports have referred to respiratory failure, no official post-mortem findings or definitive medical cause of death have been made public. It is therefore more accurate at this stage to say that he suffered a medical emergency during the swimming section.

What is the IRONMAN 70.3 Vitoria-Gasteiz?

The IRONMAN 70.3 is a middle-distance triathlon made up of a 1.9-kilometre swim, a 90-kilometre cycle and a 21.1-kilometre run. The swimming section takes place in the Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir before competitors continue through the countryside of Álava and finish in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

More than 3,000 athletes from 85 nationalities were expected to participate across the full IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events. Vitoria-Gasteiz was the only Spanish city hosting both distances on the same day, with international competitors accounting for 63.4% of the entrants in the 70.3 event.

Almost half of those registered for the middle-distance race were taking part in an IRONMAN-branded event for the first time. Professional athletes competed only in the 70.3 distance, alongside a much larger field of amateur participants from Spain and abroad.

Event continues under a shadow

The competition continued following the emergency, while organisers limited their public response to confirming the death and extending their sympathies to those affected.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over one of the Basque Country’s largest endurance-sport events. No further information had been released by Tuesday about the athlete’s identity or whether additional findings would be published following the medical investigation.
