MADRID – Threats against Spanish politicians continue. On Tuesday, Correos intercepted a letter to Madrid regional president Díaz Ayuso. Like other politicians and the Guardia Civil, it was a package with bullets.
The security of Correos in Sant Cugat (Barcelona) handed over the package and contents to security services. The situation in Spain is worrisome after several politicians received threats by mail.
New incident after earlier threats against Spanish politicians
A few days ago, politicians Pablo Iglesias and Fernando Grande-Marlaska, as well as the head of the Guardia Civil, all received a threatening package with bullets. Last Monday, in an unrelated incident, it was announced the Spanish Minister of Tourism received a letter containing a bloodied knife.
The security services will not comment further on the letters’ content while the investigation is still ongoing. On Tuesday evening during an interview by Trece TV, regional president Díaz Ayuso said that she does not value this incident at all. She said briefly, “These people are looking for their moment of glory and I don’t want that moment for them.”
Support from politicians from Spain
Other Spanish politicians and Prime Minister Sánchez commented on Twitter follwoing the news. Sánchez said a threat against Díaz Ayuso, or any other member of the government, is a threat against all of them. He will not be tolerant of people who are complicit in violence or its spread, and therefore strongly condemns these actions.
Not all incidents linked
According to various Spanish media, the investigation of the threat against Minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto, is already well advanced. Furthermore, this incident is unrelated to the packages of bullets sent to other politicians and the Guardia Civil.
Police reportedly identified the man who sent the package with the bloody knife to Reyes Maroto. It turned out to be a man from El Escorial with serious mental health problems.
