In the heart of Andalucia, the animal sanctuary Todos los Caballos del Mundo is grappling with unprecedented challenges. A series of relentless storms, Jana, Konrad, Laurence, and Martinho, have battered southern Spain, leaving a trail of devastation.
In the face of relentless storms, the dedicated volunteers at Todos los Caballos del Mundo are desperately battling the elements to protect the over 300 animals in peril under their care.
A quagmire of mud and decay
Typically bathed in the gentle Andalucian sun, the 60,000 m² sanctuary has transformed into a mire of mud. Water permeates every corner; hay supplies are rotting, storage facilities are submerged, and finding dry resting spots for the animals has become an insurmountable task. This situation is particularly dire for the elderly and infirm horses, who require dry bedding to rest and recuperate.
“Every day, for over three weeks now, we’ve been working around the clock for our animals,” says Concordia, one of the two sisters at the helm of the sanctuary. “The rain is unrelenting. We must continually purchase hay and straw, but our reserves are depleted. We urgently need assistance.” Beyond horses, Todos los Caballos del Mundo provides a haven for dogs, cats, ferrets, tortoises, turkeys, and chickens, all living semi-freely, choosing their companions and spaces.
The genesis of Todos los Caballos del Mundo
Approximately two decades ago, sisters Concordia and Virginia Márquez García relocated to Málaga, confronting widespread animal abandonment and cruelty. This led to the birth of Todos los Caballos del Mundo, a non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing horses, donkeys, dogs, cats, and other animals suffering from neglect or abuse. Over the years, they’ve saved countless animals from the brink of death, offering not just shelter but medical care, abundant love, and a second chance at a dignified life.
What sets Todos los Caballos apart is the unwavering commitment of the sisters and their volunteers. With limited resources but immense love and determination, they’ve created a sanctuary for animals that had nowhere else to turn.
Concordia’s tireless advocacy against animal cruelty
In addition to managing the sanctuary, Concordia has been a relentless advocate against animal cruelty in Spain. Her efforts have led to several perpetrators facing justice, shining a light on the often-overlooked issue of animal abuse. For her it’s simple: one animal saved, one ‘fool’ in jail. This attitude takes this Spanish animal rights activist to places even the police won’t go. If she can save an animal, she fears nothing and no one. The only thing that scares her regularly is having to stop her work due to lack of funds and close her shelter, where over 300 animals have found a safe home.
How you can make a difference for the animals in peril
The situation is critical. The animals are in dire need of food, dry bedding, medical care, and, most importantly, compassionate individuals willing to support their welfare.
Every contribution counts. The sanctuary operates entirely on donations and volunteer efforts.
