Andalucia schools closed Wednesday as flood risk rises

Andalucia schools closed Wednesday

Schools across Andalucia will switch to remote teaching on Wednesday, 4 February, after the regional government ordered the suspension of all in-person classes because of flood risk linked to Storm Leonardo. The same decision also applies to Ceuta, where in-person classes are also being suspended as a preventive measure.

The decision follows the elevation to “situación operativa 2” under the Plan de Emergencias de Andalucía for the risk of flooding and adverse weather. Schools are instructing families not to travel to centres on Wednesday, and to use online teaching where this is set out in their educational plans.

For now, the broad suspension is described as applying across all provinces of Andalucia except Almería, although the regional government has indicated this could change if forecasts worsen.

What is suspended on Wednesday, 4 February

The order affects in-person activity in schools and institutes, with remote teaching used where possible. Reporting also says the suspension extends to day centres for older people and people with disabilities, and authorities are urging the cancellation of outdoor sporting activity to reduce avoidable travel during the highest-risk period.

Universities are being advised to adapt too, and some are already announcing their own cancellations for Wednesday, depending on local risk and operational decisions.

Why the decision has been taken

Forecasters have warned that the midweek spell could bring exceptionally intense rainfall, with a heightened risk of flooding because recent systems have already left the ground saturated. The regional government has also placed the Unidad Militar de Emergencias on pre-alert positioning to support operations if needed.

What parents should do tonight

Do not assume the normal school run is happening tomorrow. Check your school’s official message, because many centres are circulating the same instruction: no on-site attendance on Wednesday.

If you need to verify quickly, the safest reference points are your school notice, the 112 Andalucia updates, and the latest official weather warnings.
