A serious health scare has struck the renowned Festival Vino Somontano in Barbastro, Huesca, after a Salmonella outbreak left hundreds of festival-goers suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms.

With 424 people affected and seven hospitalisations, the local authorities are working to pinpoint the source of the contamination.

Symptoms surge post-festival

The first reports of illness began circulating soon after the festival concluded, drawing in thousands of wine enthusiasts. Most affected individuals exhibited classic Salmonella symptoms, including nausea, severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever. Emergency medical teams swiftly responded, with many people being treated for dehydration and digestive issues.

Among the hospitalised were five children, alongside two women. Fortunately, all remaining patients were treated in their homes, with their condition stabilising.

Tracking the contamination’s source

Following laboratory tests, Salmonella bacteria were identified as the cause of the outbreak. Investigations have focused on the food served during the festival, with particular attention given to meat products, eggs, and mayonnaise-based sauces. Samples from these foods are currently being tested for contamination.

Local authorities are collaborating closely with event organisers and nearby restaurants to determine the exact source of the infection, while also reviewing food hygiene standards and making improvements where necessary.

Health advice for locals and visitors

Health authorities are urging anyone in Barbastro, especially those who attended the festival, to be vigilant for signs of foodborne illness. Those exhibiting symptoms are advised to stay hydrated and avoid dairy products. Individuals with more severe or persistent symptoms, or those with pre-existing health conditions, should seek medical care immediately.

Due to the 72-hour incubation period for Salmonella, further cases cannot be ruled out. Although the situation is under control, officials anticipate an increase in reported cases as the effects of the infection manifest.

The festival’s impact on the region

The outbreak has placed a heavy strain on the town of Barbastro, which relies heavily on the annual Festival Vino Somontano as a major cultural and economic event. Local officials have stressed the importance of improving food safety protocols at large-scale public events to prevent future incidents.

As investigations continue, all involved parties are working together to ensure the health and safety of both residents and visitors. Authorities remain committed to ensuring this unfortunate event does not overshadow the region’s future celebrations.
