Weather warnings remain across Spain despite brief weekend lull

Spain weather warnings January still active nationwide

Spain weather warnings January

A brief easing in Spain’s unsettled weather has brought some respite this weekend, but weather warnings remain active across much of the country, with authorities urging continued caution for travel and outdoor plans.

According to AEMET, the worst of the recent storm system has passed, yet unstable conditions persist in several regions. Rain, strong winds, coastal swell and snowfall at higher elevations remain a concern as January draws to a close.

Rain and flooding risks linger

Parts of Andalucia, the western interior and sections of the Mediterranean coast continue to face intermittent heavy rain. While rainfall is less intense than earlier in the week, saturated ground increases the risk of localised flooding, particularly near riverbeds and low-lying areas.

Emergency services are advising residents and visitors to avoid crossing flooded roads or dry riverbeds, even when water levels appear low. Many incidents during winter storms occur after rainfall has eased, when conditions feel deceptively calmer.

Wind and coastal warnings remain in force

Strong winds continue to affect exposed coastal areas, with yellow and amber warnings still active along sections of the Atlantic and Mediterranean seaboards. Rough seas and large waves are expected in some zones, prompting restrictions on maritime activity and coastal access.

Local councils in coastal towns have urged caution near promenades and harbours, particularly during high tide. Beach access may remain restricted in certain areas until conditions stabilise fully.

Snow and travel disruption in northern regions

In northern and mountainous regions, snowfall remains a factor at higher altitudes. Snow warnings are affecting parts of the Cantabrian range, the Pyrenees and inland mountain routes, where sudden temperature drops may lead to icy road conditions.

Drivers are being reminded to check road conditions before travelling and to carry chains or winter equipment where required. Some secondary routes remain subject to temporary closures.

What travellers should keep in mind

While this weekend’s weather is calmer than earlier in the week, disruption remains possible, particularly for longer journeys. Rail and road services may still experience knock-on delays, and weather-related advisories could change at short notice.

Travellers are advised to monitor local updates, follow emergency guidance and allow extra time for journeys, especially in regions still under alert.

A cautious calm, not a clean break

Forecasters describe Saturday’s calmer spells as a pause rather than a clean break. Strong winds and hazardous coastal conditions remain the main risk in several regions this afternoon, while road disruption continues in parts of the north and west due to snow and flood impacts. Conditions are expected to turn more unsettled again on Sunday as new fronts move in from the Atlantic.

For now, conditions are improving — but vigilance remains essential.
