Catalonia chemical fire

A fire at a chemical warehouse in Catalonia has triggered emergency protocols across five municipalities near Barcelona and Tarragona. Residents have been ordered to stay indoors following the release of a toxic chlorine cloud.

The fire broke out early on Saturday morning at a facility owned by CleanWater Pool, located near Vilanova i la Geltrú. Emergency services responded to the blaze at approximately 2.20 am.

Emergency plan activated due to chlorine exposure risk

Around 70 tonnes of chlorine were stored in the warehouse when the fire began. Due to the nature of the chemicals involved, the regional emergency response for chemical hazards (Plaseqcat) was immediately activated.

Stay-at-home orders were issued for Vilanova i la Geltrú, Sant Pere de Ribes, and Cubelles in the province of Barcelona. The lockdown also applied to Calafell and Cunit in the province of Tarragona. The Roquetes area, although not under lockdown, was also affected by the smoke.

Residents received mobile alerts advising them to keep windows and doors closed and to deactivate any air circulation systems. Authorities stressed the importance of remaining indoors until the toxic cloud subsides.

Lithium battery may have triggered fire

While investigations continue, initial reports suggest a lithium battery may have caused the fire. Authorities have not confirmed this as the official cause.

The blaze generated a thick smoke cloud, which potentially contains harmful substances such as chlorine gas. Due to possible respiratory health risks, precautionary lockdowns were enforced.

Large-scale emergency response underway

Over 60 firefighters and hazmat teams were deployed to tackle the blaze. By Saturday morning, officials confirmed the fire had been contained, although the smoke cloud remained a concern. Monitoring continues.

No injuries or hospital admissions have been reported so far. Health authorities are assessing air quality levels in the affected areas.

Transport disrupted, events cancelled

The fire has disrupted regional infrastructure. The C-31 road was closed, and access to the C-15 was temporarily restricted. Train services through the area also faced suspension or delays.

Outdoor events, including local markets and sports fixtures, were cancelled across the affected towns as a precaution.

Authorities continue to monitor situation

The Catalan regional government is urging residents to remain calm and comply with safety instructions. Updates will be issued as conditions evolve.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about chemical storage and fire safety in industrial zones located near residential areas.
