The Spanish inflation accelerated in June, fuelled by rising costs linked to summer tourism. According to the National Statistics Institute, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) climbed to 2.3% year-on-year, up three tenths from May.

Domestic flights and travel packages within Spain led the surge, with prices jumping nearly 25% compared to the previous month. Hotels and guesthouses also saw significant increases, accumulating a 30% rise since the start of 2025.

Beyond tourism, higher electricity tariffs and more expensive fresh fruit contributed to the overall inflationary pressure. Electricity prices have risen by 3.5% in June alone, while fresh fruits are up more than 20% so far this year.

What has become more expensive?

In the past year, jewellery and costume jewellery saw the steepest rise, up 22.8%. Chocolate and coffee also posted double-digit increases. Among essentials, eggs climbed 18% annually.

Other notable increases include:

  • Domestic tourism services: +23.4% in June
  • International flights: +7.1% in June
  • Motor insurance: +8.8% in June

What has become cheaper?

Not all items followed the upward trend. Olive oil recorded a dramatic drop, now 45% cheaper than a year ago. Sugar prices also fell by nearly 20%. Summer sales contributed to lower clothing costs, with apparel falling 1% and footwear slipping 0.3% last month.

Mixed picture in household costs

While food prices rose moderately by 2.8% over the year, the cost of housing-related expenses increased by 4.2%, mainly due to electricity. Rental prices edged up slightly, while mobile phone services remained flat and some TV subscriptions even declined marginally.

Motor fuel provided relief for drivers, falling 7.6% year-on-year, though car insurance nearly offset those savings with its sharp increase.

The data underline how Spanish inflation is being driven unevenly across sectors. Tourism and energy are exerting significant pressure on household budgets, while some essential food items and clothing are helping to contain broader price rises.
