longest promenade in the world

Spain is home to the longest seafront promenade in the world, a scenic 26.63-kilometre stretch along the Atlantic coastline of Lanzarote. Known as the Paseo Marítimo, this extensive route offers stunning viewpoints, sheltered beaches, and a range of dining options, making it one of the most attractive coastal walks in Europe.

Since 2016, Lanzarote has held the record for the world’s longest promenade, surpassing others in Europe, including the well-known promenade in A Coruña. This project has placed the Canary Islands among the top destinations for travelers seeking a mix of relaxation, active tourism, and breathtaking coastal views.

The Paseo Marítimo begins in Puerto del Carmen, one of Lanzarote’s most famous tourist destinations, located in the municipality of Tías. With its golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, Puerto del Carmen attracts both domestic and international visitors.

Spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean

Beyond its length, the promenade is also regarded as one of the most beautiful coastal routes in the world. The pathway connects various key tourist spots up to Costa Teguise, one of Lanzarote’s most visited resort areas. Throughout the journey, walkers, joggers, and cyclists can admire breathtaking ocean views, picturesque beaches, and well-positioned rest areas. Visitors can also sample delicious Spanish cuisine at numerous beachfront restaurants and bars.

Highlights along the promenade

One of the standout attractions along the route is Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, where travellers can explore Playa del Reducto and the historic Castillo de San Gabriel. Other key highlights include the white sandy beaches of Las Caletas and the famous stranded cargo ship, El Telamón, which is a favorite spot for both tourists and adventure seekers.

An unplanned yet successful project

According to José Torres, former president of the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, the construction of the Paseo Marítimo was never part of a specific urban development plan. Unlike A Coruña’s boulevard, Lanzarote’s seafront path was created with the simple aim of connecting different coastal areas. However, its impact on local tourism and mobility has exceeded expectations, making it a key asset for the island.

Lanzarote surpasses A Coruña

Many Spaniards still believe that A Coruña boasts the longest promenade in Europe, but Lanzarote has held the record since 2016. In comparison, the Atlantic City promenade in the United States measures just 9.25 kilometres, making Lanzarote’s seafront walkway the undisputed champion of coastal promenades.

With its impressive length, accessibility, and stunning ocean views, the Paseo Marítimo of Lanzarote stands out as a must-visit destination for those looking to experience the best of Spain’s Atlantic coastline.
