Salvador Calvo’s Netflix drama Adú was a front runner with 13 nominations, including Best Film. However, that honour went to Pilar Palomero’s The Girls.

Pilar Palomero’s coming of age drama The Girls won the 2021 Goya Award for best film, Spain’s top film honour. Palomero, who is a first-time feature director, also won Goyas for best new director and best screenplay for her drama set in a convent school. The film also took home the cinematography award.

Florian Zeller’s Brit drama The Father, featuring Anthony Hopkins in the lead role, won Best European Film. Hopkins, his co-star Olivia Coleman and the film are anticipated to feature heavily in next week’s Oscar nominations.

New format for 35th Goya Awards

The 35th Goya Awards adopted a hybrid format due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Some received their awards on-site, while many discovered they were winners virtually. Antonio Banderas presented at an audience free Teatro del Soho CaixaBank.

Hollywood names

Among the Hollywood names presenting the event’s awards were Pedro Almódovar, Penélope Cruz, J.A. Bayona, Alejandro Amenábar and Paz Vega.

Hollywood names including Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and Charlize Theron, sent pre-recorded messages.
