Spanish National Police have arrested 21 alleged ultras linked to violent clashes that erupted in Seville ahead of this year’s Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

The detainees, identified as members of the radical fan groups Boixos Nois and United Family, were apprehended across Seville, Barcelona, Tarragona, and Girona in a coordinated operation aimed at curbing organised football violence.

The arrests stem from Operation Cañebolo, an ongoing investigation led by the Information Units of Catalonia and Western Andalucia, under the supervision of the Comisaría General de Información and the National Sports Office (OND). Authorities say the operation reaffirms Spain’s “zero tolerance” stance against violent extremism in sport.

April’s pre-match riots in Seville

The incidents occurred on 26 April 2025, just hours before the final between Spain’s two biggest clubs. Tensions escalated in Plaza de San Francisco, where members of both ultra groups—known to share ideological ties—reportedly clashed with police. Officers from the UIP riot units were deployed to control the disturbance, with a dozen sustaining injuries during the confrontation.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos as radicals vandalised a nearby bar, hurling tables, chairs, and other objects at police. One Boixos Nois member was arrested on the spot for attacking officers.

Continuing investigation

Police confirmed that those arrested face charges of public disorder, criminal damage, and belonging to a criminal organisation. One suspect is also accused of assaulting an officer and causing injuries. The investigation, overseen by Seville’s Court of Instruction No.16, remains open, with more arrests possible in the coming weeks.

A firm message from law enforcement

The National Police emphasised that the operation highlights Spain’s firm approach to tackling violent extremism in sport. Through sustained coordination and intelligence work, the force continues to dismantle networks that threaten the integrity of football.

“Once again, the National Police demonstrates its capacity and determination to eradicate violence from Spanish football,” a spokesperson stated.

Authorities maintain investigations like Operation Cañebolo are essential to ensuring the safety of fans and families at major sporting events.
