FOOTBALL – With goals from Elexpuru and Bartel, the Spanish under-19 squad managed to become European champions for the fourth time on 9 July. After an exciting final against a strong Norway, the match was only decided in added time.

At the 2022 UEFA Women’s Under-19 European Championship, Spain won the title. In the final match, Spain defeated Norway 2-1, but the win did not come easily. Norway took the lead within 5 minutes after a defensive error by Spain.

Half an hour later, Spain’s Ane Elexpuru equalised after a defensive error on the part of Norway. Then, a few minutes later, Spain managed to score a second goal. However, this goal was immediately disallowed for offside. The leadership’s decision was questionable, which led to quite a revolt from the Spanish staff.

Spain dominate in match but goals did not come automatically

The break apparently did the Spanish team very well, because the ladies came back considerably stronger in the game. Spain came very close to a second goal several times, but the lead was delayed until after regular time. The referee added an extra 4 minutes to the game and in the final seconds, Bartel scored the winning goal for Spain.

With this win, the Spanish women’s team won its fourth European Championship title. In 2004, 2017 and 2018, the Spanish ladies also became European champions. A great achievement, especially considering that Spain played nine European Championship finals.

The tournament was successful in all respects for the young women’s team. Spain was not beaten once during the European Championship; the team won nine times and drew twice.
