MALLORCA – A 23-year-old woman has died, and another 25-year-old was taken to Son Espases hospital in a critical condition following a tragic sea accident off the beach of Cala Mandia, in Manacor, Mallorca early this morning.
Both women had just arrived and were on holiday with a group of female friends. The group consisted of a total of six young vacationers from Germany. The women are said to have gone into the sea in the early hours of this morning despite strong waves and the presence of a red flag. The flag had been hoisted late in the afternoon due to rough seas and stormy weather. And as such forbids swimming in the sea.
Authorities alerted
Emergency calls were made at around 2.30 am alerting the authorities to the scene after the two women got into difficulties and could not get back to the shore. The other four women made it back to the beach unhurt. According to reports, they were then helped by a young man.
Local police were able to rescue and resuscitate the 25-year-old, who was taken to hospital. However, the other female was still in the water at that point in time. And initially could not be found.
According to local reports, national police officers are said to have pulled the unconscious female out of the sea. However, she could not be resuscitated.
German sisters
The woman who was taken to hospital was later pronounced brain dead. She is thought to be the sister of the other lady.
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
