Parts of the Valencia region expect a scorching Sunday: Spain’s national weather service AEMET has issued a red alert for dangerously high temperatures. In some areas of southern Valencia and Alicante provinces, the mercury could climb to a blistering 42°C.
The red alert will be active from 11am to 8pm. It will mainly affect inland zones, where the heat will be most intense. Temperatures along the coast are expected to be slightly more bearable, though still very high.
Spain heat wave pushes 45C as warnings extended
Orange and yellow warnings across the region
Elsewhere, an orange warning is in place for the northern coast of Valencia and the interior of Alicante, with highs of up to 41°C. Inland southern Valencia could reach 40°C.
In Castellón, temperatures are also set to rise sharply. Inland and coastal areas in the south of the province, as well as inland northern Valencia, could see highs of 39°C. Further north, the interior and coastal areas of Castellón are under a yellow alert. There, meteorologists expect temperatures to reach around 36°C.
Natural parks closed due to fire risk
The heatwave continues to grip much of eastern Spain. Therefore, the Generalitat Valenciana has taken the precaution of closing all 17 of the region’s natural parks. The move aims to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect visitors from extreme conditions.
Stay safe
Officials are urging people to avoid being outdoors during the hottest part of the day, to drink plenty of water, and to check in on vulnerable groups like the elderly, young children, and those with health conditions. Staying in the shade or indoors could make all the difference.
Be aware of heatstrokes
Heatstroke happens when your body overheats, due to high temperatures or intense physical activity in the heat. Body temperature can rise above 40°C. Without urgent treatment, it can cause lasting damage or be fatal. Symptoms to watch for are:
- Body temperature above 40°C
- Confusion, agitation or unconsciousness
- Hot, dry skin or heavy sweating
- Nausea or vomiting
- Flushed skin, rapid breathing and heart rate
- Throbbing headache
