Puente Genil

When it comes to Christmas celebrations, Spain’s larger cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Málaga often steal the spotlight. But this year, the small municipality of Puente Genil in Córdoba province has captured the festive spirit in a spectacular way.

Known for its stunning light displays and warm community celebrations, Puente Genil offers an unforgettable holiday experience.

Early start to the festivities

Puente Genil became the first city in Spain to switch on its Christmas lights in 2024, illuminating its streets as early as November 14. With nearly two million LED lights, the town’s decorations rival those of much larger cities. The main streets, including Paseo del Romeral, are adorned with an enchanting array of lights. The display features 281 arches, 105 lanterns, eight large decorations, and 840 garlands.

Spectacular light and sound show

One of the highlights is the “Celestial Forest,” a stunning light and sound show where 12-metre-high tree-like arches transform the streets into a magical woodland. Other areas, like Avenida Manuel Reina, boast undulating ceilings of light that create breathtaking visual effects. The entire display immerses visitors in a unique festive atmosphere.

December activities in Puente Genil

The festive lights are just the beginning. Throughout December, Puente Genil hosts a variety of events and activities. From flamenco performances to concerts and a diverse culinary scene, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The full programme and detailed information can be found on the town hall’s website.

Perfect for a Christmas getaway

Puente Genil’s location makes it an ideal destination for a Christmas trip. Just over an hour’s drive from Córdoba and other major Andalucian cities like Málaga, Seville, and Granada, it’s easy to reach by car. From Córdoba, take the A-45 motorway and then the A-304. Visitors travelling from Málaga can follow the same route, switching to the A-318 at Lucena, for a journey of approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Why visit Puente Genil this Christmas?

For those seeking an alternative to the bustling crowds of larger cities, Puente Genil offers a more intimate yet equally magical Christmas experience. With its dazzling lights, vibrant cultural programme, and convenient location, it’s a hidden gem that deserves a spot on any holiday itinerary.
