Experts have issued a dire warning to pet owners in Spain, especially those who live in areas with pine trees or visit them frequently.
The pine processionary caterpillar (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is already occuring in October instead of February and March as usual. This has set off alarm bells among authorities and pest control workers. The caterpillar can be especially dangerous for dogs. Experts therefore recommend taking precautions.
The appearance of this caterpillar infestation in the middle of autumn has taken science and residents by surprise. For example, in Alhaurín de la Torre, in the province of Málaga. Abel Perea, councillor for the environment in this municipality, explains that this abnormal behaviour of the processionary caterpillar is due to the effects of climate change, which has caused a warm, dry autumn, followed by recent rains, which has changed the biological cycle of the caterpillar. This also has consequences for the control of the caterpillar.
Consequences of contact with the processionary caterpillar
Especially for pets and children who play in pine forests, the caterpillar poses dangers. The stinging hairs of the caterpillars can cause severe allergic reactions and in some cases even lead to death in dogs. Here are some of the effects:
- Vomiting
- Swelling of various body parts
- In severe cases, loss of tissue on the tongue
- In more extreme and untreated cases, death.
Pet owners are advised to exercise extreme caution, especially in areas with pine forests, and to keep a close eye on their pets after hikes. Inhaling or coming into contact with the stinging hairs of these caterpillars can cause severe symptoms such as vomiting, swelling, and, in the most extreme cases, loss of tongue tissue.
Regarding the threat of the processionary caterpillar, the recommendations are clear: do not walk your dog in areas with pine trees. Check animals after a walk in high-risk areas.
