On Monday, the Spanish national football team was greeted by an ecstatic crowd in Madrid after winning the European Championship final. The team made a tour of the city in an open-top bus. The players were also welcomed by President Sánchez and King Felipe VI of Spain.

Before the celebratory bus tour, both the president and the King praised the players for their beautiful football and their achievement. According to Sánchez, the Spanish team has “shown the best version of Spain.” King Felipe VI was presented with a shirt by captain Morata, with the text ‘Kings of Europe’ and the number 4 on the back, referring to the team’s fourth European title. The head of state received the delegation along with Queen Letizia. Their daughters, Leonor and Sofia, were also present, both wearing football shirts with the number 10.

The promise of star player Cucurella

One of the standout players of the winning Spanish football team in the European Championship was Marc Cucurella. The Catalan, with his distinctive long hair, has been praised in the media for his excellent performances. He became one of the key figures in Spain’s European football success. A song about him even became a hit on TikTok: ‘Cucurella, he eats paella, he drinks Estrella…’

Previously relatively unknown to the general public, Cucurella also became the subject of jokes and a promise he made a few days before the final on social media. With a big wink, the media are now calling on him to keep his promise. What promise did the cheerful Cucurella make?

“My wife would kill me if I did that”

During an interview with the news channel Cope, Cucurella was asked if he would cut his hair if they won the final. “I would consider it,” he said, “but my wife would kill me.” Later, he came up with another idea: I could dye my hair red. And braid it for the summer. Shortly after the victory, a stream of messages appeared on X: “You promised, Cucurella!”

Cucurella himself is taking it sportingly. The player confirmed in an interview after receiving the trophy that he would keep his promise. How exactly? He still had to think about it. But he assured, “I keep my word.” Perhaps we’ll soon see the player with his already striking hair sporting a red mane on the Spanish football fields.

Long night of fiesta in the streets of Madrid

In Madrid, the celebrations continued throughout the evening. The Spanish media unanimously agree on the team’s excellent performance, team spirit, fighting spirit, and the joy with which the players played. These are golden times for Spanish football, and the whole country is celebrating. However, the footballers themselves are already looking to the future. “We have many beautiful things to show still.”
