A fire at Barcelona’s ferry terminal sent a thick column of black smoke across the skyline on Sunday, creating one of the most striking images of the day in the city.
The blaze broke out in the Grimaldi terminal area near the Pont d’Europa and quickly became visible from multiple parts of Barcelona, although no injuries were reported.
What burned at the terminal
The fire affected a truck and a line of freight units waiting to be shipped, with reports saying 20 semi-trailers or containers were hit by the flames. El País said the goods were destined for routes to the Balearics, Italy, and North Africa, while local and agency reports agreed that the incident did not involve dangerous goods.
Emergency crews moved quickly
Barcelona firefighters received the alert at 1.17 pm and sent 10 crews to the scene, backed by a fireboat pumping in seawater. The fire was brought under control at around 4.00 pm, according to local reporting, after emergency teams spent hours containing the blaze inside the port area.
No injuries, but the incident triggered emergency measures
Even without casualties, the scale of the smoke forced a broader emergency response. The port activated its Internal Emergency Plan, a nearby ferry was moved as a precaution, and Protecció Civil placed PROCICAT on pre-alert because of the fire. Emergency services also received 76 calls linked to the incident.
A busy travel hub caught up in the disruption
The timing gave the story extra weight. The fire hit one of Spain’s busiest port zones during the Semana Santa getaway period, when ferry traffic and freight activity are both under greater pressure. There is no indication so far that passengers were harmed, but the images and precautionary moves underline how quickly an industrial incident at a major transport hub can become a wider public-safety story. This broader point is an inference based on the location, the emergency measures taken, and the holiday travel context.
The cause is still unknown
By Sunday evening, the fire was under control, but the cause had not yet been established. For now, the clearest confirmed picture is this: a blaze beginning in a vehicle at the Barcelona ferry terminal, freight units badly damaged, a dramatic smoke plume over the city, and a large emergency response that prevented the incident from becoming more serious.
