If you’ve ever lingered by a Spanish supermarket’s fish counter, you’ll know the sight can be irresistible—gleaming sardines, coral-pink tuna steaks, gilt-head bream and sole neatly arranged on crisp beds of ice. But where should you go for the very best?

Spain’s leading consumer watchdog, the OCU, has just delivered its verdict—and the results may surprise you.

Nationwide survey on quality and freshness

The OCU surveyed 4,000 shoppers and assessed fish counters at 38 supermarket chains from Galicia to Andalucia. Each was scored for freshness, taste, presentation, variety, value for money, and something the OCU calls “reliability”. This covers accurate labelling of species and catch areas, clarity on whether the fish has been previously frozen, proper hygiene, and knowledgeable staff able to answer customer questions.

Unexpected names at the top

In a twist few saw coming, Costco—better known for bulk bargains than fresh seafood—emerged as Spain’s top supermarket for fish, scoring an impressive 93 out of 100. With just four branches nationwide, it has built a reputation for immaculate counters and consistently high standards.

Second place went to Catalonia-based Esclat, with 88 points, praised for its meticulous display and reliable quality.

What shoppers actually prefer

When it came to customer favourites, a different picture emerged. Gadis, a Galician chain with outlets in Castile and León, was the most-mentioned supermarket in the survey, winning 70% of votes. Hipercor followed, with 62% of respondents saying it’s among their preferred places to buy fish.

The stragglers

Not all chains impressed. Aldi, Lidl, and Covirán landed at the bottom of the OCU’s table, criticised for limited choice, lower quality, and failure to meet expectations for freshness. The watchdog warned that improvements were needed if these brands wanted to compete in the premium seafood market.

Mercadona’s new fish strategy

While Mercadona didn’t claim a top spot, it’s rethinking its approach. During 2025, the chain plans to emphasise ready-to-eat packaged fish, scaling back the traditional counter in many stores. The aim is to make seafood more convenient to buy and encourage consumption, which has been falling nationwide. However, Mercadona insists it will still prioritise locally sourced, high-quality fish.

Spotting the freshest catch yourself

The OCU also shared tips for buyers. Fresh fish should have clear, bulging eyes, vivid red gills, firm flesh, and a natural sheen. A glossy, intact abdominal cavity is a good indicator, while proper ice coverage, sloped trays to drain water, and minimal spraying are signs of good handling.

A healthier, tastier choice

Choosing where to shop can make a big difference—not just to flavour, but to health and sustainability. Fresh fish is a cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, linked in countless studies to better heart health and longer life expectancy. With the OCU’s rankings in hand, Spanish consumers can shop with confidence, knowing they’re bringing home the best the market has to offer.
