MADRID – In January 2022, a total of 27,756 children were born in Spain. This is an increase of 15.7% in the birth rate compared to the same month in 2021 (3,764 more). However, it is 8.4% less than in January 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic (2,558 less).
These figures are from the Spanish National Statistical Institute (INE) monthly estimate of births. In 2021, Spain was still at an all-time low in terms of the number of births; at 338,532, the number of births in that year was the lowest since records began in 1941.
Birth rate increased
However, January’s figures show the first increase in the number of births in this month in the last five years.

Mortality rate dropped
On the other hand, in the first eight weeks of 2022, 82,683 people died in Spain, 8.1% less than in the same period of 2021 (7,240 less) and 11.1% more (8,286 more) than in the same weeks of 2020, according to the INE’s estimate
The number of deaths has thus fallen to the level of 2017, when 82,525 deaths were recorded in the first eight weeks of that year. In the same period in 2018, there were 83,083, 77,998 in 2019, 74,397 in 2020, 89,923 in 2021, and in 2021 82,923 people died.
