After months of intense heat, September begins with a drop in temperature, unstable weather with precipitation and storms.
As specialists from the Spanish weather service Meteored point out, September will be accompanied by ‘an increase in cloud cover and lower temperatures. However, this is with the exception of the southeast, where it will exceed 35 degrees in some areas’.
But most notably, there may be a weather change in Spain at the end of this week, according to the latest weather forecasts. ‘Our models predict heavy showers from polar air, likely approaching the northwest coast of the Spanish mainland,’ Meteored explains.
These showers are coming from Greenland and if the predicted scenarios come true, ‘rainfall could become significant, due to the passage of several very active precipitation fronts’. There is a chance that the showers will approach the peninsula on Sunday, 4 September, ‘causing precipitation to fall in several areas’.
Will there be storms in September?
According to the State Meteorological Office (AEMET), September is characterised by rain. During the first ten days of the September month, ‘more rain than normal will fall in the northern part and the northwest’, while in the rest of the country there will be less rain than normal. After that, there is no clear trend, ‘but there is a chance that less rain than normal will fall in the southern and western parts of the peninsula’.
September, Meteored adds, ‘could end up around normal again, with a wet first half of the month across much of the northwest and dry in the south of the peninsula’.
Compared to July and August, September will start ‘without a strong anticyclonic flow’. ‘This flow is very easy to predict even in the long term, but in its absence long-term weather forecasts also become more complicated,’ Meteored said.
