VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA – When you lie on the beach, you can expect a lot. Crowds, heat, umbrellas flying off in high winds, a football in your face from children playing, sunburn or other discomfort. But you don’t expect a scare from a wild boar.

It happened last Wednesday on the beach of Benajarafe (Vélez-Málaga). Beachgoers saw a wild boar swimming in the water here at around 12 noon. They watched in amazement as it approached the shore and emerged from the water like any other vacationer. After the dive, the animal ran across the sand and quickly hid in the thicket beyond.

During its flight, the wild boar dodged the umbrellas and towels that lay on the sand. The unusual (and fun) scene was recorded by some attendees. Consequently, it wasn’t long before the video spread like wildfire across social networks.

The animal escaped from the beach with great skill, tripped over nothing and no one was injured. Nevertheless, emergency service 112 was called by several people to warn of the presence of the wild boar on the beach of Benajarafe next to the Bar Mediterráneo restaurant. The swimmers reported that the animal was in the water some time, swam near the buoys, and later left the water.

The local police, the Guardia Civil, animal collection and road maintenance staff (due to the proximity of the main road) went to the beach to look for the wild boar. But so far nothing is known about whether the animal has been found.

Wild boar family in Fuengirola

Spanish media report that it is not uncommon to see these animals in urban areas and on beaches. In fact, residents of Fuengirola witnessed a similar scene on Wednesday. At around 11.00 pm, they witnessed a family of six wild boars walking through the local botanical garden, next to the Miramar shopping centre.

This concerned two adults, accompanied by four offspring. Local police were notified of the incident via 112 and officers from the Fuengirola Police Department went to look for the animals. Of whom so far there is no trace.

Also in August on the beach of Cadaques in Alt Emporda, a wild boar is said to have bitten a girl in the leg. In June in Alicante, there was a similar incident on the beach of Alfaz del Pi. Here, the animal in question bit a 67-year-old woman.
