supermarket opening hours

MADRID – Easter 2023 is just around the corner and that means there are some holidays when many businesses will close their doors. Supermarkets adjust their opening hours to the festivities so that their customers can still do their last Easter shopping in time.

Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday, April 2, and ends on Easter Monday, April 10. Although there are processions almost every day of the week in many places, most businesses usually don’t close until Jueves Santo (Maundy Thursday). Good Friday (7 April)  is the only national holiday of this week and is thus celebrated across the country.

Maundy Thursday (April 6) is a public holiday in all of Spain except Catalonia and finally, Easter Monday (April 10) is a public holiday in the Balearic Islands, in the Valencian Community, Catalonia, La Rioja, Navarra, and the Basque Country.

The opening hours of supermarkets such as Mercadona, El Corte Inglés, Lidl, Aldi, Dia or Carrefour may also differ. That is why it is useful to know on which days which supermarkets are open in which time periods.

Mercadona

Normally closed on all Sundays and public holidays, Juan Roig’s company adapts to the holiday period and is open on Maundy Thursday with normal hours, from 9.00 am to 9.30 pm in those communities where Jueves Santo is not a public holiday. Furthermore, all branches are closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Mercadona will also close its supermarkets on Monday, April 11 in communities where this is a public holiday.

Carrefour

The French supermarket chain Carrefour is normally open on many holidays. Much the same applies to Easter week. The branches will be open without restrictions on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday from 9.00 am to 10.00 pm. However, please note this schedule may change locally here and there depending on the location and type of supermarket (Carrefour Market, Carrefour Express, Carrefour Bio, hypermarket, etc.)

Lidl

This Easter week, consumers cannot count on Lidl on Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. Then all branches are closed. Only those Lidl branches are open from 10 am to 15 pm on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday in regions where this is not a working day. In other places you can visit the supermarket from 9.00 am to 9.30 pm.

El Corte Ingles

The large Spanish department stores of El Corte Inglés open every day at Easter, except on Good Friday. On Easter Monday, the branches are only closed in the autonomous regions where this is a day off.

Dia

The Dia supermarkets have chosen this Semana Santa to keep their branches open and also keep their usual opening hours. Although on Palm Sunday, for example, the shops open from 10.00 am to 2.30 pm, while they are open from 9.00 am to 9.30 pm on both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. However, this schedule may vary depending on the city and supermarket. Click here to find opening hours of the Día supermarket close to you.

Consum

The Consum supermarkets has different opening hours on the 7th and 10th of April for every store. Consult them via this link. The normal opening hours are from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 9.30 pm.

Aldi

The German supermarket chain Aldi is open from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 9.30 pm. The supermarket chain did not publish the opening hours for the coming Eastern days. Keep an eye on the website to check the opening hours of the store close to you.

For all supermarkets you can search for your store in Google and most of the times you see the current status, open or closed. The coming days we will keep updating this page and adapting it to the latest changes.
